The Lorquí children and youth participation group presented its proposals on environment, equality and children's rights (23/04/2018)

Last Thursday, April 19, took place the Plenary Council of Child and Youth Participation of Lorquí, in which children and adolescents of the municipality presented the work they have been doing on the right to live in a safe, healthy and friendly with rights of childhood.

The Mayor-President of the Council, Joaquín Hernández, participated in the session;

the councilor for Social Policy, Carmen Baños;

the councilor of Participation, Jesús Abenza;

and the representatives of the Child and Youth Participation Group.

The Council analyzed the impact of environmental damage on children's rights and what citizens and political leaders can and should do to improve and preserve our environment.

The representatives of the Child and Youth Participation Group exposed the consequences of the deterioration of the environment in which we live on health, employment, security, access to housing and food and protection of children, among others, also making proposals for improvement.

Councilmen Carmen Baños and Jesús Abenza presented the actions that the City Council is carrying out regarding environmental protection and the right to live in an environment that is safe, healthy and friendly with the rights of children.

These programs include environmental education and intervention in our environment, tree planting, recycling competitions involving the entire educational community, designing public spaces for intergenerational coexistence, eliminating architectural barriers, offering safety in the school environment and road safety education , reduction of risks in terms of drug dependency, prevention of gender violence, training programs to improve job opportunities for young people who have dropped out of school and networking in situations of vulnerability.

The representative in Murcia of UNICEF-Spanish Committee, Carolina Vivancos, visited Lorquí on the occasion of the day to know the projects and the methodology that is being developed in the municipality.

Vivancos praised the work of the Lorquí Group and the choice of topic, in line with the issues to be addressed at the V National Meeting of Child and Adolescent Participation Groups, within the framework of the Child Friendly Cities program.

"The themes chosen by us to work in the National Meeting have been gender equality and the right to live in a friendly environment with children and adolescents," said the spokesperson of the Child and Youth Participation group.

The young people of our town will be responsible, along with those of San Javier, to represent our region in this national meeting in which children and adolescents from all over the country will work during a weekend to design activities and proposals in favor of the rights of children.

In the questions and answers section, the Mayor and the councilors assumed the demands of the youngest.

"We have returned to having public swimming pools and the skate park has been built, soon we will have a place for the music school and the associations and we are working to implement free wifi points in public spaces, and almost half of the health plan. The city council is writing to focus on reducing inequalities in health and promoting healthy habits in children and adolescents, "said Baños and Abenza.

"You, better than anyone, know what needs the children and adolescents of this town have, so we commit ourselves once again to value and understand all the contributions you have made, because with your work and effort you are giving example and impulse to the rest of the groups. We need your collaboration to build a better village for all ", as the mayor emphasized, who also congratulated the work done by all the members of the Council for being an example of participation in the Region.

The session ended with the reading and approval of the "Manifesto for the right to a friendly environment with the rights of children".
