The work done by young analyzes the solar movement through a shadow
A group of students of the course Introduction to Research the Roman Institute Garcia Lorquí have been finalists in the outreach program 'Adopt A Star', whose main objective is to bring science and technology to the general public in a dynamic way , easy and enjoyable.
Students have participated in the 'Talk of astronomy or astrophysics', opting to IMVO prize whose winner will receive a telescope to the center, with a project that has studied the movement of the sun through the analysis of the shadow.
They are the only ones selected in the Region of Murcia, next to a professor at the University of Murcia awarded in another category, traveling on 7, 8 and 9 October to Algeciras to participate in the conference 'Science in Action', thanks to the cooperation of the City of Lorquí, the AMPA Institute and the Association Road to Humanism and Science.
His work, done under the tutorship of teachers Encarna Gómez and Francisco Domingo González, has involved taking various measures projected by a wooden stick on the sports courts sun shadow center.
The collection of information took place every half hour from 8.30 am to sunset, which varied depending on the time of year it was.
a total of 6 measurements coinciding with special dates on the calendar as the equinoxes, solstices or the day of San Juan were made.
These data allow to calculate the degree of sun angle on each of the measurements.
The objectives of this project focused on the students were able to identify the cardinal points and the meridian, recognize the different stations from the ellipse created, explain the movement of rotation and translation of the earth around the sun, determine the tilt of the earth with respect to its axis according to the seasons and interpret the position of the earth in the equinoxes and solstices.
The 'Science in Action' program is an initiative of the Higher Council for Scientific Research, the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, the Royal Society of Physics, the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry, the Spanish Society of Astronomy, the Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology , the Geological Society of Spain and the National University of Distance Education which aims to present science in an engaging and motivating way for young people and the general public interested in it.
